Dr. Cara Lan, ND
I was fortunate to grow up in Boulder, Colorado, an area of the country where natural medicine is welcomed, valued and used routinely. For this reason, I was accustomed to addressing any health issue with herbs and nutrient-dense foods. However, my first introduction to homeopathy wasn’t until I was in college and began seeking treatment for seasonal allergies, anxiety and insomnia.

I was exposed to a compounded form of homeopathy – i.e. using several homeopathic remedies together in a mixture. I was able to find some relief of my symptoms with this method and simultaneously began working for Motherlove Herbal Company, a wonderful female-owned herbal company that produces herbal preparations for pregnancy and lactation support. I began to develop a passion for natural medicine and decided to pursue a career as a naturopathic doctor at Sonoran University in Tempe, AZ.
At Sonoran University, I began taking classes in classical (one-remedy-at-a-time) homeopathic history, philosophy and practice under the mentorship of Stephen Messer, ND and others. I was fascinated by how differently homeopathic medicine approached healing compared to any other method, including herbal medicine. Treating the whole person with just one remedy at a time? How could that possibly work? And yet as I delved into my clinical rotations, I began to see absolute miracles in others’ healing. I also began to see a classical homeopath myself and received remarkable results in my health. Even though the main symptom I was trying to treat was anxiety, in just a few months on my prescribed remedy people began complimenting me on how good my skin looked, how I had lost weight and how happy and well-balanced I appeared– despite being very stressed as a first-year medical student. Indeed, the remedy was addressing me as a whole person and my vitality, not just the anxiety I was experiencing. I was sold on the power of homeopathic medicine and the rest is history.
This year (2024) marks the 20th year since I began learning about both homeopathic and naturopathic medicine as a first-year medical student at Sonoran University. While I am always fascinated by the myriad of other healing modalities available and also have a great passion for lifestyle medicine, mind-body medicine and herbal medicine, I have always used homeopathic medicine as the primary modality for myself, my family and my patients, simply because it works so well.
Before joining Resilience, I worked in community medicine, pediatrics, family practice and mental health practices. In each scenario, I have always relied on the power of homeopathic medicine to deliver monumental results… doing for the patient what months or maybe even years of other therapies might do, and without the high cost associated with a laundry list of supplements, expensive medications and invasive, high-cost procedures.
In my personal life, I am extremely grateful to have been introduced to homeopathy before I had my own children. I cannot imagine how much more difficult raising children would have been without homeopathy to “save the day” in nearly every instance. In my own household we have used homeopathic medicine to treat everything from fevers and acute illnesses to injuries, burns, bug bites and stings to sadness, grief, anxiety and fear to temper tantrums, night terrors and PTSD. I now have two beautiful, strong, healthy, and happy teenage daughters who have been raised to know that the correct homeopathic remedy will quickly and effectively alleviate most health issues (of course we combine the power of homeopathic medicine with a healthy diet and lifestyle – which is crucial for the medicine to be able to work so well). I will forever be so grateful to have had this modality at my disposal in raising kids.
Other than my passion for homeopathic medicine and natural medicine, I am a lover of the outdoors and of all the beauty and power that is inherent in nature. I also love reading, strengthening my body with workouts and movement, painting and drawing, meditating and connecting with the divine and being with my kids, kitties, family, community and friends.
