Area of Specialty: OCD
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by recurrent intrusive thoughts (obsessions), repetitive or ritualistic behaviors (compulsions), or both. In many cases the compulsions serve as a mechanism to control or counteract the repetitive or intrusive thoughts. The obsessions and compulsions can become so intrusive and time consuming as to interfere with daily life. In some cases, those who suffer with OCD may become suicidal.
The cause of OCD is not well understood, but there are several factors that contribute to worsening of symptoms which can help guide treatment interventions.
Removing Obstacles in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
The most common obstacles to healing in OCD are:
- Poor diet high in inflammatory processed foods with low nutrient density
- Specific nutrient deficiencies or deficiencies caused by prolonged medication use
- Methylation defects (MTHFR), or other genomic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that impact neurotransmitter production or clearance (i.e. COMT, MAO, DAO)
- Histamine dysregulation
Stimulate Healing in OCD
At Resilience Naturopathic, we have found that the most effective method to stimulate healing in OCD is homeopathy. This unique system of medicine is the cornerstone to our success in the Resilience Method as it helps our patients find peace and control of their thoughts. Homeopathy repairs biochemistry, rather than forcing it with the use of medications, herbs, or high doses of nutrients, which backfires in OCD more often than in other conditions.
With homeopathy, those suffering from OCD
- Have progressively less intense obsessions and compulsions
- Have increasingly longer periods of mood stability
- Are able to bounce back from life’s ups and downs that would previously have triggered an episode
- Gradually reduce their medication
- Get better as a whole person – mind, body and spirit
- Feel like themselves again!

A Case Study in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Karen* was 34 when she made the jump to call Resilience Naturopathic. She was diagnosed with OCD when she was a teenager, and had tried many medications with varying results, but always a lot of side effects. She had tried cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, behavior reduction therapy, you name it. She had also seen some of the most prominent integrative psychiatrists in the country with little to no improvement in her symptoms. In fact, she was so sensitive to medicine that even natural treatments often made her feel much worse.
When we first spoke at the free consultation, we discussed how homeopathy helps to repair body systems so that they function on their own, rather than force biochemistry like medications and even most natural supplements. This seemed to click for her, so in spite of how hard it is to spend 3 hours talking about the very thoughts that torment her, she dove in. She did an excellent job recounting the unique specifics about the thoughts that tormented her as well as her physical symptoms, of which she had many, and her general sensitivities to the world. The remedy that we started her case with was Phosphorus, which gave her more significant relief faster than anything else she had ever taken, without the side effects.
Unfortunately, as is always the case with patients who have OCD, the symptoms returned. Slightly discouraged, Karen called the office and moved her scheduled appointment forward. Her doctor took the time to explain that thoughts and behaviors in OCD are like well worn trails in the side of a mountain, and what homeopathy was doing was trying to reseed that trail. It will take time for the dirt to have the consistency and the nutrients to support the seeds, or even allow the seeds to stay firmly in the ground. It will take even longer for those seeds to grow into fully grown plants, and even longer for those plants to expand and proliferate to hide the fact that a trail had been there. It is similar with OCD and the well-worn thoughts. This also made sense to Karen, and she was happy to see that when she increased her potency of Phosphorus, she again felt relief without side effects.
Karen continues to see progress with a small step back, followed by more progress with a small step back, but each time she notes that the thoughts are easier to control than the last time, and a full blown “attack” might just be a thing of her past.
